We the People…It is time to Unite, and Reunite, to Save Wolves!!!
April 10, 2011
This is most trying times for wolf advocates like us, but more that that it is crunch time for wolves across this country. We need to Unite, and to reunite now. When I say reunite we need to let go of any differences in how we approach protecting and saving wolves. I am talking specifically about the ten Conservation groups that supported the proposed settlement, recently denied by Judge Molloy.
There is power in numbers. In fact, if you look at how devastating the Tester/Simspon rider could and will be for wolves, looking back I can certainly understand what the ten groups fears were then, and are now. Without a best science based study and without a legal recourse to file lawsuits on behalf of wolves, there is certainly a crisis to be met head on, and the time is right now.
I have contacted Mike Leahy, Regional Director of Defenders of Wildlife in the Northern Rockies and asked him to regroup and take the lead in fighting this rider. I know Mike’s passion for what he does, and his passion for wolves. I have no doubt that Defenders, NRDC, and the other groups will be ready and willing to jump into this fight. I don’t think they ever stopped.
No matter how let down many of us may be we need to put that in the past and unite, and reunite..for WOLVES. We need to show our unity in this battle, this war. That is the only way we can have a chance at winning, and we have a very short time to do so.
PLEASE TAKE ACTION IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:
Sign every petition by Defenders, NRDC, Biological Diversity, Earthjustice, and of course all the other conservation groups, especially Western Watersheds Project.
Contact your Senator and your House Representative and urge them to pass the Budget Bill, but to remove the Simpson/Tester Rider that contains reckless language designed to destroy the Endangered Species Act, and specifically to bring wolves to the brink of extinction once again.
Follow the links below that will help you in contacting your Representatives and take action TODAY, TOMORROW and EVERY DAY until the Bill is passed.
Contact your House Representative…Remove the Simpson/Tester rider from the Budget Bill
While it is most important to Take Action in the following links with Senators and the Committees, it is also most important to contact your Congressperson in the House of Representatives.
Many are still unaware of this rider. Tester and Simpson are Democratic Senators and to leave this up to the remaining 98 Senate members, and the committees they are in, is risky business to say the least.
The members of the House have as much say as the Senate, and urge your representative to remove the Simpson/Tester rider in the Budget Bill as it is designed to destroy the Endangered Species Act and to once again return the Gray Wolf, our nation’s most prolific apex predator, back to the brink of extinction.
Please call today and voice your strong support.

ACTION ALERT UPDATE – Will the Democrats be forever remembered as the party who destroyed the ESA?
The anti-ESA / anti-wolf rider has, again, been included in the Congressional 2011 Budget Bill . Not only is this a devastating blow to science-based wolf recovery efforts in the Northern Rockies, but it is a clear assault on the Endangered Species Act.
- The Wildlife Press – http://wolves.wordpress.com/2011/04/09/budget-bill-pending-before-congress-would-remove-wolves-from-endangered-list/
- Union of Concerned Scientists – http://www.ucsusa.org/news/press_release/scientists-denounce-congress-endangered-esa-0526.html
The final vote takes place on Wednesday (4/13) or Thursday (4/14). Please contact the Democratic members of the US Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (contact info. below). Make a special effort to CONTACT SENATOR KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND (NY) who has already expressed opposition to the wolf delisting rider. Ask her to be our voice to save the integrity of the Endangered Species Act and wolf recovery efforts in the Northern Rockies.
TALKING POINTS – I join the 1300+ voices of the Union of Concerned Scientists who recently denounced Congress’ attempt to undermine the integrity of the Endangered Species Act by including Rep. Simpson’s and Senator Tester’s language in the 2011 budget bill which lifts federal protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies. It was a Republican Administration that enacted the ESA in 1973. Do we want the Democrats to be forever remembered as the party that destroyed this most respected environmental law? I strongly urge you to strike this sneak attack on wildlife from this and other Congressional budget bills.
