Wildlife center conducts wolf naming contest![]()

The Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center in Divide announced it is conducting a naming contest for the first wolves to be reintroduced to their native habitat, with the plan being for the first wolves to be reintroduced to arrive on Dec. 31. ![]()
A press release from the center stated the last wild wolf that was part of an established population in Colorado was killed in 1945.![]()
The contest will run from Nov. 27 to Dec. 20 and is for Colorado middle school students between the fifth and eighth grades. Students are asked to choose from a list of 14 potential names and vote on their favorite. Votes will be calculated electronically and finalized no later than Jan. 1. ![]()
The name with the most votes will be assigned to the first released wolf, and the process will continue for all following wolves. ![]()

Center representatives said they sent invitations to all public Colorado middle schools they could reach, but any other schools that have not been contacted and would like to participate may email wolfcontestco@gmail.com with the subject line “Wolf Naming Contest.” ![]()
At this time the center is unsure how many wolves are set for reintroduction, but the organization will soon receive a federal ID number for each wolf, and that number will be matched with the chosen names. ![]()

Your article on Asha, the wandering gray wolf of eastern Arizona, gave my heart hopeful wings. I am a longtime supporter and volunteer of the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project, here in Flagstaff, and this is a huge step forward in learning all that Asha has to teach us.![]()

Author Rick McIntyre gave us (humans) so much insight into the wolves of Yellowstone in his trilogy of books that start with "The Rise of Wolf 8." His research is from decades of research from the beginning of the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone in 1995. Now after thousands of letters, meetings, forums, gatherings and documentaries, we Arizona wolf supporters are seeing our local newspaper headlines ‘Managers have no plans to capture wandering gray wolf’!![]()
