The War on Wolves continues, so does the Need to Take Action!

Posted on

As we anxiously await Judge Molloy’s decision once again on the path of the Wolf in America, there are a bevy of Bills that will need our undivided attention and Action!

Judge Molloy may have a decision on the settlement proposal to delist wolves once again.  What this will do is return the wolves to the state management of Montana and Idaho, and eventually to Wyoming should they come up with a suitable wolf management program.  Leaving the decision to FWP of Wyoming as to what a suitable wolf plan might entail, is a bit bit frightening.  Right now Wyoming has a shoot on sight policy for 90% of the state, and the other 10% is protected Yellowstone National Park boundaries.  The good thing is the wolf population continues to grow there as wolves are still protected under the Endangered Species Act.  Aside from the countless poaching incidents, this population will be negatively impacted if Wyoming regains control.  The same in Montana and Idaho.

The big three ..Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming will undoubtedly have a wolf hunt in the Fall to dramatically reduce wolf populations in the Northern Rockies.  The settling conservation groups will have little power to stop it as they have given up their power to file lawsuits until 2016.   The plan contains wording that the population will be monitored by “independent scientists” however I have yet to see the names of those that will be in that study and process.   Needless to say if it is made up mostly of biologists that are paid by the states in any way, shape or form, then this is more of a political process than a scientific one.  I will reserve judgment on this issue until I see who the “independent scientists     “are.  I do know that the settling conservation groups wanted to have a say in who would be involved, they were denied that request.  That in itself is troubling.

Now for business at hand in which we can still get involved and try to make a difference on these pending bills.   I did ask Mike Leahy, the Regional Director of the Northern Rockies for Defenders of Wildlife what would happen to the settlement proposal should any of these very damaging bills get approved, making the proposal more or less a mute issue, he sent me this part of the agreement:

The settlement is voided if Congress passes legislation removing ESA protections for N Rockies wolves:

14. The Parties agree that, should Congress, by statute, remove ESA protections for some or all of the wolves in the NRM region, or should the partial stay of the Court‟s remedy order referenced in paragraph 1 be dissolved, modified, or set aside before the issuance of a delisting rule pursuant to paragraph 5, above, this Agreement is dissolved and terminated, and all of its provisions become null and void. In any event, this Settlement Agreement terminates upon completion of the obligations set forth herein.

I have also been in touch with Western Watersheds Project and they are convinced this settlement is a very bad move, and they and others are adamantly opposing it, stating once again it is based purely on politics and that science is left out of the equation.  They feel that the wolf population, while close to recovery, will be greatly reduced in a short amount of time.

The process of the Court Hearing is now out of out hands.  The decision, and a very tough one at that, now lies in the court of Judge Molloy.  But what we can do is to continue to fight for wolves by contacting our Senators and urging them to defeat the following pending bills as it pertains to wolves and the environment.

H.R.1
Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2011
The Continuing Resolution Bill, which is needed to continue to fund government operations, had numerous amendments to delist or defund wolves. Two of these were attached as riders by Senator Jon Tester and by Representative Steven Pearce. The Continuing Resolution Bill was defeated in its previous versions but will be coming back, and no-one in the Senate has taken action to remove the Tester rider to delist the northern Rockies gray wolves.

You will notice that Representative Denny Rehberg of Montana even targets the highly endangered Mexican Gray wolves(current population is under 50 wolves).  He is NOT a friend of wildlife and the environment, period!

HR1 is most disturbing and possibly the bill with the greatest chance of passing. While the original wording was defeated twice the current bill does  contain language which would simply remove wolves from protection under the Endangered Species Act with no recourse.  The wolf population would face certain decimation if this was to pass.

It is interesting to note that the anti-wolf population, made up mostly of hunters and ranchers in the Northern Rockies region, also do not support the settlement proposal.  They feel that it is far to liberal, and that they want , or as they put it “need” the ability to have total control over wolves.  We all know what that means and that would lead to the total extinction of a wolf population in the Northern Rockies, with the exception of Yellowstone National Park.  Even there, however, packs would be critically reduced as wolves know no boundaries and they would undoubtedly be shot and killed by stepping a foot outside the protected area of Yellowstone.  This was evident by the 2009 wolf hunt that witnessed the beloved Cottonwood Pack to be shot and killed, as two wolves with collars, along with the pups from the last litter, were among the victims.

We Can Never Let This Happen Again!

Below is a list of Senators, and also Committee members.  I urge everyone to call your Senator and urge them to defeat the bills as they pertain to wolves, the environment, and the Endangered Species Act.  Time is of the essence so

Please Act Today
