California Wolf Center has been part of the Species Survival Plan for the endangered Mexican Gray Wolf for 25 years. CBS 8 San Diego visited us recently to discuss a historic milestone in recovery efforts – at least 241 wolves documented in the last USFWS count. There is a lot to celebrate, but we are not done yet!![]()

Ms Mexican wolfAbout the size of a German shepherd dog, the Mexican gray wolf is the smallest wolf in North America. Once numbering in the thousands, this species was eliminated from the US landscape by 1970 due to habitat alteration and eradication efforts that were aimed at protecting livestock and game species. With only a handful of these wolves remaining in zoos, the US and Mexican wildlife agencies adopted the Mexican Wolf Recovery Plan, which sought to return 100 wolves back to their historic range. Reintroduction began in 1998, and by 2006 just under 60 wolves were confirmed in the wild. While numbers continue to grow slowly, humans continue to pose the greatest threat to their survival because of intolerance and misconceptions about wolves. The genetic diversity of the species also needs careful monitoring as inbreeding is another serious threat gray wolves face in the wild.
