It is a positive step that NPS has submitted a proposal to the Alaska Board of Game (BOG) to create a protective wolf buffer in the Wolf Townships. Yet, there is a long way to go to before it ever becomes a reality. ![]()

The Alaska Board of Game is made up of entirely hunters and trappers and the state administration is anti wolf and anti predator. They have repeatedly demonstrated their hostility to wolves, grizzlies and black bears. So, the challenges are huge. ![]()

Early next year, it is expected that the new documentary A Good Wolf (goodwolffilm.com) by Ramey Newell will be released. This documentary covers the specific issues of Denali's wolves being killed in The Wolf Townships and the ongoing differences in values between those who wish to protect wolves and those who wish to kill them. ![]()

Once more information on when the documentary will be released, I will post them here - even if I am traveling. ![]()
Hopefully, this documentary will create more interest and scrutiny of this issue and of the BOG. So, by the time the BOG meetings begin next March in Fairbanks, there will be more momentum for protection.

Mexican gray wolves typically described as “lobos” in New Mexico are a subspecies, and as the climate warms the Service worried they could migrate north and mix with gray wolves released in Colorado.![]()

This could cause inbreeding and predation, as the Service noted the larger gray wolves were likely to dominate the Mexican wolves.![]()

If the ranges of gray wolves and Mexican wolves expanded and eventually overlapped, the Mexican wolf population could be adversely affected by interspecific competition and hybridization,” read the environmental impact statement.![]()

Mexican wolves captured in Colorado would be returned to the recovery area. Under the current proposal.![]()

USFWS said it hoped to prevent inbreeding and conflicts between the two as they are recovered.![]()

If Mexican wolves disperse northward of their historical range, or if gray wolves disperse southward, competition or interbreeding could occur,” read the report.![]()

the Service will work with states to minimize impacts to Mexican wolf recovery, including federal permitting mechanisms or other tools. Therefore, adverse impacts to the Mexican wolf population are not expected.”![]()

The decision to release gray wolves in Colorado also drew concerns from conservation groups is New Mexico as the proposal would allow the killing of wolves preying on livestock in the region, and include no requirement that they use nonlethal protective measure.![]()

Robinson, “When the first wolf bolts out of a portable kennel into western Colorado’s cornucopia of elk and deer, it will start to right the wrong of federal wolf extermination a century ago,” Robinson said. “After clinking our glasses in a toast to the wolves in their new home, we’ll closely monitor wolf management to ensure the budding population is allowed to thrive without persecution.”![]()
