Washington State’s gray wolf count declined in 2024tinyurl.com/3b6t4u23According to the plan, wolves in Washington would be considered recovered and protections could be removed when at least four successful breeding pairs are present in each recovery region and there are three additional breeding pairs anywhere in the state for three consecutive years; or when there are at least four successful breeding pairs in each recovery region and six additional breeding pairs anywhere in the state for a single year.Although multiple wolves have dispersed south of I-90 into the Southern Cascades and Northwest Coast recovery zone, three of the four wolves documented in this region were illegally killed and no wolves were observed in the region at the end of 2024, WDFW found. Two cases of wolves killed illegally last fall were documented in Klickitat County and rewards are offered for information in those cases.Weiss said the numbers of wolves killed in eastern Washington, which has the largest population of wolves, means fewer wolves are available to disperse and move into other parts of the state. Wolf dies in national park, another tracked for 1,230 milestinyurl.com/mr3wty3zOne of Colorado’s gray wolves released into the state as part of a reintroduction effort has died in Rocky Mountain National Park, while another has been tracked moving across vast distances since its release, Colorado Parks and Wildlife says.The agency said Thursday that last Sunday, it received a mortality alert for a female gray wolf that was one of the 15 from British Columbia that were released into the state.The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating because gray wolves are a federally listed species under the Endangered Species Act in Colorado.Several wolves that are part of the reintroduction effort have died from a variety of factors, including reasons not yet determined or made public.Wolf survival in Colorado is within normal margins for a wolf population in the Rocky Mountains. Any reintroduction effort includes eventual mortality levels and these were incorporated into the Colorado Wolf Restoration and Management Plan.Thursday, Parks and Wildlife released its latest monthly map updating watersheds where collared wolves had been over the prior month.
